August 4, 2022 – (SALEM) Former Congressman John Tierney has endorsed Tristan Smith for State Representative in the 8th Essex District.

“My decision to endorse Tristan is based on a number of considerations,” Tierney said. “Foremost is the same reason so many of the folks I represented for almost two decades in the US Congress from Lynn, Swampscott and Marblehead have chosen to support Tristan. There is an intelligence, energy, and commitment to issues and public service that is obvious when you speak with him, and, as importantly, when he listens to you.”

Tierney, who Represented the 6th Congressional District for nine terms continued, “While it seems too many candidates today either cannot articulate why they are seeking office, or think that being in office is wholly about them, Tristan knows he is running out of a passion for service and understands the office of State Representative is about you. At a time when many of us sit around proclaiming how difficult it is to interest good, passionate, and savvy people in running for public office, this is an occasion when we can support one such very worthy candidate who will both give his generation a voice and represent us intelligently.”

“I am very grateful to have earned the endorsement of former Congressman Tierney,” Smith said. “I have always admired his commitment to progressive values and the strong leadership he provided as our Representative in Congress for almost two decades.”

The former Congressman elaborated on his support for Smith, saying “My decision to endorse Tristan is not based on my having met him a number of times over the years at various political events or having been interviewed by him when he was still in high school. It is also not based on the fact we were both lucky enough to have graduated from both Salem State and Suffolk Law School. It is based on the foregoing observations and a trust in his character.”

“On September 6, the entire Commonwealth, as well as the people of Marblehead, Swampscott, and Lynn will win if you send Tristan to Beacon Hill as your next State Representative,” Tierney said.

Tierney, an Attorney, was first elected to Congress in 1996 and served as Congressman of the 6th Congressional District from 1997 until 2015. Smith, a lifelong resident of the 8th Essex District, graduated summa cum laude from Salem State University, and received his juris doctor from Suffolk University Law School in 2022. His campaign for State Representative has highlighted the value of strong and collaborative leadership on the important issues facing the District and the Commonwealth, including climate change and coastal resiliency, investment in transportation improvements, public education, and affordable housing.
